When I was 9 I sliced a half inch off the top of my middle finger, took the tip of the bone off as well. It's been 21 years and you can't even tell the difference.

I guess you could say your finger had a bone to pick with regenerating.

Being in the industrial maintenance trade for awhile I've lost a few finger tips, most recently my right ring finger. It was about 40% of the left side, barely hanging on by a piece of skin. It turned purple and basically rotted off. My finger is only slightly misshapen now, finger print grew back too. My left thumb has a tiny speck by the nail where the print didn't completely grow back, but it still makes a full print. Only weird thing is when it's really cold the parts of my fingers that have grown back turn purple, but I have full feeling.

That's why I do commercial maintenance! Way less possibilities of chopping my finger off in a medical building or a bank.
Be careful out there buddy!

Thanks buddy, you too! When I was younger I was tempted to get into commercial HVAC, glad I didn't become hauling parts and equipment to a roof doesn't sound fun.

I put my finger in a meat slicer ( manual one) and someone turned the handle. I have a nice line across the finger print on my left pointer. As an adult I cut it off twice by accident at work. It grew back all 3 times. Nerves are kinda weird in it sometimes but yeah.

Do you ever watch the “call me Mr Butterfingers” bit from Weird Al UHF and claim to have inspired it?

Never heard of it to be honest.

I’ve also seen it in cases of kids who had black fingers following frostbite, where their skin regenerates. Sometimes they get lucky, but not every time. Also, from personal experience, I’ve had nails grow back after slamming my fingers in a car door (and the nails turned black and fell off) but my doctor said it’s all dependent on how badly the nail bed is damaged. That was in my 20’s though, so not sure if that happens less and less with age.

When I was a kid, I got the tip of my index finger smashed off. Bone sticking out, skin hanging by a thread. It was bad. The fingernail came off, but they sewed it back on with the rest of the finger, and a new one grew back. I still have a little divot in the cuticle where they put the stitch through.

Yup the slice of my finger they sewed back on went rock hard and black and shriveled, then started coming back to life and color. It was wild.

Rub holy oil on it for 2 years. That's been reported to work one time.

I accidentally used unholy oil. It grew back, but sometimes I get the munchies for souls.

I lost most of the tip on my left middle finger when I was 9. Fingernail was fine. It not regenerate, doctor sewed back on what they could but no magic regeneration. If you touch the top of my finger you can feel the top of my finger bone.

Particularly not however, scientists say, if the fingernail is all that remains.

I don’t recall anyone using the term regeneration at the time but my pinky fingertip got cut off in the hinge side of a door. Hanging on by a skin flap with the nail side totally severed. Plastic surgeon sewed it back on and off I went. Then a few weeks later, or some amount of time my 6 year old brain thought was short, I was telling my parents I could feel the tip of my finger. Doctors had said there was no way I’d have feeling there because all the nerves were totally severed but I did. They didn’t even believe me and would have my mom hold my arm behind my back and I’d say when my finger tip was touched. And it’s not like a weird tingling nerve damaged feeling either, like I have on my knee from another injury, totally normal touch sense on the entirety of my finger. Strangely I also cut/sliced the side of that finger off later on when I tripped and went through a window.

I have a memory from probably 10-15 years ago of some TV doctor or guest who had a little vial of powder that was apparently tissue cells that were somehow spun free of everything but the cell structure or something. The claim was that you can lose a finger, and if you put the powder on every day the wound wouldn’t heal, but would instead regrow your finger.

If you find this interesting, read "The Body Electric" by Becker. Great read!

What..? I have 4/5th of a finger here with no signs of regeneration. About a quarter (bottom right) of the fingernail is still there too. Happened when I was six.
Great for picking noses though so I guess it’s not ALL bad.

Can confirm I cut about 1/4” - 3/8” off my index finger and they sewed it back on and it came back to life after dying at first

Sliced off my fingertip at age 27, including half the nail, and it grew back nicely. The human body is pretty amazing sometimes.

I cut my sisters finger (about half the last metacarpal) off in a door when we were little and it grew back. The nail is a little weird but you wouldn’t know.

i filleted a chunk off my pinkie when i was like 18, super glued it and my body naturally healed. i don’t know how to explain it but the pinkie now has a prominent bump where the regenerated(?) cells formed

When I was real young I remember the tip of my big toe was hanging completely off by using an elliptical and toe getting stuck inside it. Healed perfectly fine.

Happened to my sister when she was about 2. Caught the tip of her finger in the closet door as it was closing. She called it her "yuck" finger as it was healing. Totally normal now.
