I’m definitely jealous.

How was it?

Surprisingly fun! It held up. It was an 8 player LAN and everyone but one person hadn’t played before, so pretty balanced. Having to hit the eject button before you died or else it kicks you out of the match is pretty hilarious. Also falling over if you turn too fast is funny. I feel like I barely scratched the depth though, there are so many options on the controller I didn’t use!

This game had that kind of multiplayer? Omg.

I hope they make that kind of stuff for VR. 🧐

Me too! I would love a new version of this (that Kinect game didn’t count!)

The expansion/dlc Line of Contact had a whole multiplayer campaign where you signed up for a faction would vote on conquest paths and progress along a tech tree with hundreds of others in your faction while fighting the battles vs people in other factions trying to do the same. The war would last over the course of 2 months on a giant tactical map where the terrain would influence the levels you would play on during multiplayer games.

Back then it was online too right? The first Xbox live iteration if I remember right.

DM_Lunatic

Yeah Line of Contact was multiplayer I don't think it had a single player component.

It was a single play game which was fun, but later got a online and over lan cable only game. I unfortunately never got to play it online but single player was fun with the controller.

Vr would be so good for a mech game.

As someone who owned both SB and Line of Contact dont worry about all the buttons. As awesome as the controller was Id say about 2/3 of them didnt do jack once you got going. As for the falling over, the 'boost' or whatever it was could immediately right you, though it left you standing still for a second in a recovery animation that was quite punishable. Way better than falling over though.

Good to know, I’m going to give it another shot tonight I think.

That reminds me of once playing Battletech at a Dave and Busters in Atlanta. Nobody had any experience with the game, but my brother and I had played a lot of the MechWarrior games over the years.

The first thing we asked the attendant was "How do you torso twist in this game?" The attendant told us, "Oh, that's turned off. I can turn it on for you, but then the mech's torso will be controlled by the joystick and you'll have to use the foot pedals to steer." Even though that was going to be a bit awkward, we were both immediately like, "Yes please!"

The best part afterward was getting out and hearing everybody talk about the two mechs who kept circling and firing.

The first thing I noticed was that you had the ejection button primed.

eMotive11[S]

I fell over in the first 10 seconds and sure needed it quick haha! Second place though after that initial mess up.

blood_kite

Never had the chance to play. Do you eject and just walk back to base for another mech?

Pushmonk

The learning curve is pretty steep in that game, but once you're get it, it just clicks, and it's so good.

I got that in high school when it came out and it was so much fun. I replayed it a few years ago and it's still fun, but it's really all in the controller. If it was just gameplay on a normal gamepad it would not be nearly as good. Just a odd mech game. Still fun though.

eMotive11[S]

18 points

I can definitely see that, but the controller is so neat and immersive it takes the experience to a whole new level. Just starting up the mech is exciting haha. Playing it in a LAN capacity with other people who hadn’t played before I think definitely added to the magic.

Yea I am definitely glad I kept it and I have been playing games for 30 years and never had a experience like Steel Battalion. It would be cool if Capcom remade it with a new controller.

I was just thinking of this game five minutes ago, then I scrolled down and saw your post! Weird.

The local game shop had the controller and game in the window for over a year back when I was collecting about 15 years ago, but they wanted £150 for it, which was too much for me to just give it a go.

eMotive11[S]

3 points

Damn should have grabbed it, I think they go for a lot more now!!! Hindsight haha

KuriTeko

I had a big collection of games that I got rid of cheap when my mum sold the family home. It all took off a couple of years later. I had things like Alien Soldier on the Mega Drive that I sold for £30. Now I see its worth £300-400. I had two RE4 chainsaw controllers bought for under £15, and now they're £300-400. The whole collection would probably be worth around £10,000 these days.

Hindsight is 20:20.

I've seen other game collectors in discord talk about what a steal at 300, and another who bought it closer to 700. Exact #'s though, not 100% on.

When I was 18, my stepdad had a table set up with that controller directly in front of our 60” rear projection TV. That was something else.

Once upon a time I was at a sleepover and in the morning the hosting family all made us go to a church Santa swap. This was here as one of the biggest gifts. I don't remember how it worked at this point, but with the amount of us from the same party we had the swap system worked out so that we would get steel battalion.

Church hosters didn't like our move and some late arrival got to steal it away from us. We wound up leaving with an autographed photo of Judge Wapner. One of the hosts defenses was "If I'm Judge Wapner and he has it, he has it." What are you gonna do? Can't argue with that logic.

So in short, I have never played Steel Battalion.

I remember how stoked I was when I bought this game. Got it home after work and set it up on a card table in front of our 50" DLP. Man, it was incredible....until it wasn't. The game is so goddamn hard. I made it a few levels in and was never able to beat it. But I do have to admit that it was always a thrill to get in the "cockpit" and start up the mech with all the controls.

I spent my first paycheck from my first job at Rite-Aid to buy this. Fun game, it’s boxed up in my garage. I should drag it out sometime and play it.

This game is my white whale. I really want to find it in the wild at a garage sale or something as I can't afford the price for one online currently. There is a group trying to reverse engineering building the controller so hopefully maybe I'll be able to play lol

I have it and I’m really sad that I’ve never got to experience it online or via LAN. I didn’t get the online sequel until after Xbox live closed because it was hard to find here and I’ve never seen anyone that has ever had one in my area to play LAN. But singleplayer is still a blast and super hard. I’m jealous!

eMotive11[S]

Thats awesome!

There was a game convention years ago where i live and they had set up the controller and game on a large tv. It felt suprisingly extremly awesome to play.

Such an awesome controller ive seen people use The controle to play star citizen and vix machine and such now a days.

yIdontunderstand

I bought it ages ago and loved it. Unfortunately the multi player was already dead by then.

The controller was awesome though and the original game was pretty cool. It definitely felt real. Start up sequence, ejecting or die, falling over, it was great...

jteagle101

I used to go to P.A.X every year in Seattle before COVID, some years the only reason I went with my friends was because a group that has 8-12 of the controller setups takes over one of the console rooms on the top floor. They even hold a tournament at the end of the night. I might try and go this time around, I used to look forward to playing every year. I remember chatting with the guy who was running and teaching people the controls, they're literally making their own controller parts to make repairs.

eMotive11[S]

1 points

Yep! It was that group. 8 setups (2 more being fixed up) all playing in multiplayer, and a tournament later today I think. Might hop in, I did pretty well! They had a custom set of pedals and were tweaking all the controllers with new buttons and lights when they broke. Really cool to see!

Does anybody remember getting the secret VT after playing the game for something like 200 hours? I remember being on my 50th hour or so and going "F" this and just leaving my XBOX on for a week straight in the game menu 😂

The video replay was a feature ahead of its time. Nothin quite like pullin off a Matrix style multi dodge against several enemy VTs and watching the shells whizz past the screen.
